Senators write and vote on state laws and the state budget, confirm some of the Governor's appointments, and dig into how state agencies are run. State law reaches into a huge share of daily life: schools funding, health care, housing, criminal law, taxes, the environment.

4How do you change it?

This is an elected seat with a four-year term, chosen by district — you vote for the one state senator who represents your district. Senate districts are large (roughly a million people each). These races are on the regular ballot; registration, polling place, and mail ballots run through the Orange County Registrar of Voters (ocvote.gov).
